The village of Plainfield has joined municipalities, as well as state and federal governmental offices, honoring the nation’s founding document.

On Sept. 17, Mayor Mike Collins issued a proclamation, honoring this week as “Constitution Week” in the village.

Monday marked the 231st anniversary of framing of the Constitution by the Constitutional Convention.

“It is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document and its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate it,” Collins said in the proclamation. “I… ask our citizens to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us through this guardian of our liberties.”

Constitution week is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23.

The annual celebration was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 1955, with the resolution adopting the week nationally adopted into law in 1956.

The goal of the annual celebration is to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, as well as inform citizens about the Constitution’s role in the heritage and foundation of the American way of life.

According to the DAR, Constitution Week is a time to learn more about the document, as well as to celebrate the freedoms it affords for Americans.
