After observing Alcoa eagles, Liberty and Justice, in their habitat via live stream, eight students in Jodi Olsen’s fourth grade class at Oak View Elementary School are creating a life-sized eagle’s nest.
Liberty and Justice laid two eggs earlier this year and will have eaglets sometime this month. Students can observe them as they eat, sleep, and incubate their eggs.
With help from staff at the Bolingbrook Lowes, the students constructed a plan to build an “average” size eagle nest six feet in diameter by three feet high.
They used PVC piping, piping glue, sand paper, paint, zip ties and branches.
The students, measured, cut, angled, glued, and learned about the adhesion of glue and primer and the use of PVC piping throughout the world. They also researched the American Bald Eagle.
View art teacher James Battle helped them create lifelike eggs to put in their nest which will be showcased at Oak View’s STEM night and Science Expo from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 21.
Students working on the project are Bryan Aguirre, Ariana Barajas, Dulcemaria Barajas, Ivan Contreras, Ashley and Kevin Pantoja, Danny Salgado and Aishat Sheleru.
