Kayak programs encourage residents to explore Will County forest preserves

The Forest Preserve District of Will County is offering residents the opportunity to get outside and into a kayak with two program being offered later this summer.

Paddle the Preserves – a program intended to encourage participants to discover the district’s lakes by kayak – and a private kayak instruction program will be offered at preserves in Joliet and Minooka on three days in July and August.

Each program will feature four one hour sessions. The programs are scheduled to be held from 2-6 p.m. July 8 at Rock Run Rookery in Joliet, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 9 at Lake Chaminwood in Minooka, and again at Lake Chaminwood from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 20.

Rock Run Rookery is located on Youngs Road, south of Route 6, in Joliet. Lake Chaminwood is located on Shepley Road, west of Interstate 55, in Minooka.

Previous kayak experience is required for Paddle the Preserves. Private kayak instruction sessions will provide one-on-one training tailored to the individual. Kayaks and other equipment will be provided.

Cost is $10 per person per session for Paddle the Preserves, and $40 per one hour session of private kayak instruction. Both kayak programs are for ages 12 and older; ages 12 to 17 must be accompanied by a registered adult.
